NFL Draft 2007: What Does It Take To Be No. 1?
by Karl Yu, WinnerOnline

SPORTS

Continued from page 1

The experts are saying that the Raiders may go the QB route. The top two QBs in the draft are projected to be LSU’s JaMarcus Russell and Notre Dame’s Brady Quinn and given that Oakland was second last in passing offense, averaging a measly 151.2 yards a game, QB might be the way to go, given that both would bring a lot to the Raiders.

JaMarcus Russell (-600)

The LSU signal caller will probably be better suited for the Raiders given the “great protection” that will be afforded him by the Oakland offensive line. Oakland QBs were sacked a combined 72 times and given Russell’s 6’6” and 260 pound frame, he will probably sustain repeated sacks better than someone with a slighter build.

Brady Quinn (+2500)

Quinn was tutored by Charlie Weis, who knows a thing or two about winning in the NFL. Weis was offensive coordinator on the great Super Bowl winning Patriot teams and you can bet that he was given young Quinn a tip or two about the big leagues. His stock has been dropping in the weeks leading up to the draft though.

Calvin Johnson (+200)

Although it wouldn’t be surprising if either Russell or Quinn pulled a silver and black jersey over their head on Saturday, Al Davis could surprise. It wouldn’t be the first time and it won’t be the last.

Oakland’s top two WRs on the depth chart, Joey Porter and Randy Moss, are not happy and want out, Moss was even rumored to be headed to Green Bay earlier, a deal which could still come to fruition.

Davis is even rumored to be taking a good, long look at WR Calvin Johnson. The Georgia Tech product could help fill the void if either Moss or Porter doesn’t return.

Joe Thomas (+2500)

The draft forecasters are projecting Russell, Quinn and Johnson as likely choices, but another avenue they haven’t explored are options for Oakland’s other glaring weakness. Russell or Quinn won’t have successful rookie campaigns—if indeed they do start—if defensive linemen, linebackers, safeties and the odd corner are constantly knocking them on their butts.

It might be smart to fix up an offensive line that allowed 72 sacks last season and had the league’s fourth worst rushing offense.

According to the experts, Joe Thomas is the best offensive lineman available and his size and athleticism could help not only in pass protection but in the running game as well.

No doubt the wheel inside Davis' head is going 100 mph.
